Historically, moldavite was considered a glass meteorite or a fragment of the Moon that fell to Earth. Its special properties and very narrowly localized occurrence make it unique in the world.

• It was known as early as the Stone Age.
• When broken, moldavite and obsidian have sharp edges, so they can be used as a primitive knife. Prehistoric people knew this very well, and since no obsidian was known to occur in our territory, they used moldavites for this purpose.
• Vltavín, or moldavite as its original name goes (still used today), got its name from the place where it was first officially found.
• The German name of Týn nad Vltavou is Moldauthein.
• With their unusual origin, moldavites stand out from the range of other gemstones.
• They do not belong to any crystal system (they are amorphous); each piece is a true original, and no two are identical.
• They are transparent or translucent, green, blackish-green or brownish-green in color.
• They most often occur in spherical, ellipsoidal, ovoid, flattened and elongated shapes, whose surface is furrowed with various grooves and pits, with points and bumps protruding from it.
