Creative tips – how to make your own fridge magnet

A magnet made from a tumbled stone

  1. Choose a smoothly polished tumbled stone (size M–L, about 2–3 cm)
  2. Glue a strong neodymium magnet to the flat side of the stone (use epoxy or a strong adhesive)
  3. Let it dry overnight
  4. Put it on the fridge – your personal fridge magnet is ready!

A magnet made from a mineral card

  1. Attach a self-adhesive magnetic disc to the back of a mineral card
  2. Alternatively: laminate the card and then stick on a magnetic strip
  3. The result is a durable magnet with information about the stone

A magnet made from a photograph

  1. Print a photograph on thicker paper or glue it onto a wooden base
  2. Stick a self-adhesive magnetic strip on the back
  3. Optionally: finish with epoxy resin for durability

A magnet as a gift set

  1. Combine the magnet with a tumbled stone of the same type
  2. Add a mineral card for information
  3. Wrap it in a gift bag – a complete set!

Safety – CAUTION with neodymium magnets

• Strong neodymium magnets are dangerous for:

  • Small children under 6 – risk of swallowing! Swallowed magnets can attract each other in the intestines and cause life-threatening injuries. ALWAYS store them out of the reach of children. If a child swallows a magnet, seek medical help immediately.
  • Animals – the same risk of swallowing, a threat to life
  • Pacemakers and other medical devices – strong magnets can interfere with their function
  • Credit cards, magnetic strips, cassettes, HDDs – strong magnets can erase data
  • Mechanical watches – strong magnets can affect their accuracy

Safety rules:

  • Store strong magnets out of the reach of small children and animals
  • When ordering, make sure of packaging that prevents the magnets from getting lost
  • When doing DIY work with neodymium magnets , work carefully – magnets can pinch your fingers (a strong magnetic field)
  • Keep magnets away from electronics, cards and jewelry
  • For families with small children , choose weaker, larger decorative magnets instead – not small neodymium discs

Caring for magnets and fridge magnets

  • Neodymium magnets are brittle (they can crack on a hard impact); protect them from falls
  • Neodymium magnets must not get wet – they corrode (unless they have a protective coating)
  • Decorative magnets with stones – wipe gently with a soft cloth
  • Storage: separate strong magnets with a spacer (paper, plastic) so that they do not stick together too tightly
  • Magnets that have stuck together can be separated by sliding them sideways, not by pulling (safer)
  • Never in the microwave – metal magnets can cause damage
  • For decorative magnets with stones, the following applies: the same care rules as for the stone in question (see the category of the specific stone)

What is the difference between a magnet and a fridge magnet?+

A magnet is a raw material/component – a strong permanent magnet (most often neodymium) that serves as a functional element in DIY projects. A fridge magnet is a finished decorative object – usually for the fridge, a magnetic board or a cabinet, with a magnet built in.

What are neodymium magnets?+

Neodymium magnets (NdFeB – neodymium-iron-boron) are the strongest permanent magnets available commercially. Even small discs have enormous holding power (several kilograms). They are made in various shapes (discs, rings, balls, blocks) and sizes. CAUTION: they are brittle and can be dangerous for small children and electronics!

Can I make a fridge magnet myself?+

Yes, ideally – a DIY fridge magnet is a classic creative project. You need a strong adhesive magnet (a self-adhesive disc or a neodymium disc with epoxy) and a decorative element (a tumbled stone, a card, a wooden button, a photograph). Glue it on, let it dry overnight – done!

Are neodymium magnets safe for children?+

NOT for small children under 6 – small strong magnets are life-threatening if swallowed (they can attract each other in the intestines and cause serious injuries). For families with small children, choose larger decorative magnets with a stone – not small neodymium discs. Always store them out of the reach of children and animals.

Can I put a fridge magnet in the dishwasher or in water?+

NO – fridge magnets are not designed for the dishwasher or prolonged contact with water. Neodymium magnets corrode (unless they have a protective coating). Decorative elements (stone, paper, wood) can be damaged. Wipe gently with a soft damp cloth, then dry.

How strong are fridge magnets?+

Holding power depends on the type and size of the magnet. Small self-adhesive magnetic discs are weaker (they hold a note or a light object). Neodymium magnets are much stronger – even a small disc will hold several sheets of paper at once. You will find the exact strength in the description of the specific product.

Can a strong magnet damage the fridge or electronics?+

An ordinary decorative magnet will not damage a fridge – they are designed for this purpose. But BEWARE of electronics: strong neodymium magnets can interfere with the magnetic strips of cards, cassettes, mechanical watches, HDDs and pacemakers. Keep strong magnets away from credit cards, phones and sensitive devices.

Can I attach a fridge magnet to a wooden cabinet?+

NO, fridge magnets only stick to metal surfaces (iron, steel). For a wooden cabinet you need a magnetic board or magnetic paint. For wooden surfaces, you can alternatively use self-adhesive magnetic strips (one piece on the wood, one on the magnet).

Where can I attach a fridge magnet?+

Classic places: the fridge, microwave, dishwasher (outer side), a tin cabinet, a metal office cabinet, a magnetic board. They DO NOT stick to wood, glass, plastic, aluminum (mostly), ceramic or fabric. If you need a magnetic surface, consider magnetic paint or film.

Can fridge magnets be a gift for seniors?+

Yes, ideally – a classic small gift for grandmothers and grandfathers. Practical (they hold notes and recipes) and they look nice on the fridge. CAUTION: if the senior has a pacemaker, choose weaker decorative magnets, not strong neodymium discs.
