Raw Stones

Raw stones and minerals – natural crystals and fragments in their original, unworked form

Raw stones are minerals and rocks in their natural state – just as nature created them over millions of years and as they were extracted from the earth, without polishing, tumbling or any other working. Every raw stone is an absolute original: its own shape, its own color, its own inclusions and its own story. Raw amethyst grows as purple crystals from a rock matrix, raw rock crystal forms perfectly transparent hexagonal prisms, raw malachite shows concentric circles of green in cross-section. With raw stones you see exactly what nature created – without embellishment, without working, in pure mineralogical authenticity. In our range you will find raw stones from common varieties for beginners to rare collector's minerals for discerning collectors.

We select raw stones from verified sources around the world – from amethyst druzies from Brazil and Uruguay through raw moldavite from southern Bohemia to rare minerals from Morocco, Madagascar, Afghanistan and other world localities. Each batch is individually assessed for quality, authenticity and mineralogical value.

Why collect and use raw stones

  • Absolute authenticity: a raw stone is a mineral exactly as nature created it; no working alters its natural character
  • Each piece is an original: two raw stones of the same kind are never identical – different shapes, different inclusions, different color intensity
  • Mineralogical value: raw stones allow you to study natural crystal structures, cleavage, the refraction of light and inclusions
  • Esoteric power: many esoteric practitioners believe that raw stones retain a stronger and more natural energy than worked ones; an unworked surface does not disturb the natural flow of energy in any way
  • Decorative value: raw stones are nature's own sculptures; an amethyst point, raw pyrite or a rock crystal crystal are striking decorative elements
  • Collecting: mineral collections are a popular hobby all over the world; raw stones are the foundation of every serious collection

Overview of the most popular raw stones

  • Raw amethyst – purple quartz SiO2; crystals in druzies or loose points; color from Fe3+; Brazil, Uruguay, Zambia
  • Raw rock crystal – pure colorless quartz SiO2; perfect hexagonal prisms; Brazil, the Himalayas, Madagascar
  • Raw rose quartz – pink quartz; massive (without crystals) or rare crystals; Brazil, Madagascar
  • Raw malachite – Cu2(CO3)(OH)2; concentric green circles; Democratic Republic of the Congo, Russia
  • Raw obsidian – volcanic glass; various varieties; Mexico, Iceland, USA
  • Raw moldavite – a tektite formed by a meteorite impact; exclusively southern Bohemia and Moravia; sculptured surface
  • Raw labradorite – a feldspar with labradorescence; Madagascar, Canada, Finland
  • Raw lapis lazuli – lazurite + pyrite + calcite; Afghanistan, Sar-e-Sang, 6,000+ years
  • Raw pyrite – FeS2; cubic crystals, "fool's gold"; Spain, Peru
  • Raw citrine – yellow quartz; natural or heated amethyst; Brazil

Raw stone vs. tumbled stone vs. cut stone

  • Raw stone: the natural state without any working; an irregular shape; natural faces, cleavage planes and surface; absolute authenticity; suitable for collections, meditation, altars
  • Tumbled (smoothed) stone: ground and polished in a tumbler; a smooth, rounded surface; the natural color remains; suitable for carrying, palm stones, pocket stones
  • Cut or worked stone: cut into a faceted or cabochon shape for jewelry; maximizes optical properties; the most worked
  • Esoterically: all three forms are equal – the energy of a stone does not depend on the degree of working. The choice is a matter of personal preference and intended use

How to choose a raw stone

  • By intention: protection -> obsidian, black tourmaline; love -> rose quartz, malachite; intuition -> amethyst, labradorite; abundance -> citrine, pyrite; meditation -> rock crystal, selenite
  • By use: decoration -> larger pieces with a striking structure; meditation -> medium-sized pieces pleasant to touch; a collection -> mineralogically interesting specimens; an altar -> choose freely according to your aesthetic sense
  • By intuition: when choosing a raw stone, let both your eye and your touch be drawn; raw stones have a strong personality, and each one "calls" differently
  • By mineralogical value: for collectors, what matters is the clarity of the crystals, the presence of inclusions, the preservation of natural faces and mineralogical rarity

Caring for raw stones

  • Cleaning: a soft brush or dry cloth to remove dust; for water-resistant stones (quartz, obsidian), a brief rinse under running water
  • Careful with water: some raw stones must not get wet – selenite and halite (salt) dissolve in water; malachite and rhodochrosite react with acids
  • Energy cleansing: smudging with sage or palo santo; a selenite plate or bowl; moonlight
  • Charging: full-moon light; morning sunlight (depending on the stone – kunzite, amethyst and rose quartz fade)
  • Storage: in a soft pouch or on display, separately from harder or more fragile specimens; protect fragile crystals from falling
  • Special care for crystals: fragile crystal points (selenite, aragonite, celestine) need careful handling – their perfect crystal terminations break off easily

• Frequently asked questions about raw stones

How does a raw stone differ from a tumbled one, and which is better?+

A raw stone is in its natural state without any working – it keeps its natural crystal faces, irregular shape and authentic surface. A tumbled stone is ground in a tumbler into a smooth, rounded shape pleasant to the touch. Neither is "better" – the choice depends on the purpose: a raw stone for a collection, decoration and altars; a tumbled stone for carrying, palm stones and pocket stones.

Esoterically, both are equal – the energy of a stone does not depend on the degree of working. Some practitioners prefer raw stones for their undisturbed naturalness, others tumbled stones for more pleasant contact with the skin. Both approaches are valid.

How can I tell whether a raw stone is genuine and not a fake?+

You can recognize a genuine raw stone by its natural irregularity – natural crystal faces, natural inclusions, natural variation of color within one piece. Fakes (most often dyed glass or synthetic materials) are too uniform, too symmetrical or too perfect. Genuine amethyst has natural color zoning; dyed glass is uniformly purple without natural transitions.

The best protection is buying from a verified seller who states the country of origin and the type of stone. Inexpensive raw stones of common varieties (amethyst, rock crystal, citrine) are almost always genuine; fakes are more typical of rarer varieties such as moldavite, larimar or ruby.

Can a raw stone be used as a pendant or jewelry?+

Raw stones can be worn as pendants in several forms: a raw fragment with a drilled hole and a cord threaded through it, a raw stone wrapped in silver or gold wire (wire wrapping), or a raw crystal set in an S925 silver setting. Raw pendants keep the natural character of the stone and are popular for a bohemian and natural style.

Not every raw stone is suitable for everyday wear – softer or more fragile minerals (selenite 2 Mohs, calcite 3 Mohs, fluorite 4 Mohs) get damaged on contact with harder materials. Harder stones (quartz, obsidian, jadeite, labradorite) with a hardness of 6 Mohs or more are more suitable for wearing.

How do I correctly cleanse and charge a raw stone energetically?+

The most universal method for raw stones is smudging with white sage or palo santo – the smoke safely neutralizes accumulated energies without any risk of damaging any kind of stone. Alternatives are placing the stone on a selenite plate overnight (selenite cleanses itself and charges others) or exposing it to full-moon light.

Water is suitable only for stones with a hardness above 6 Mohs that are not sensitive to moisture – never for selenite (it dissolves), halite, malachite or rhodochrosite. Sun charging is unsuitable for UV-sensitive stones: amethyst, citrine, rose quartz and kunzite gradually fade in prolonged direct sunlight.

How should raw stones be stored?+

Store raw stones in soft pouches, on display or in open bowls, separated by hardness and fragility – harder stones (quartz, 7 Mohs) damage softer ones (fluorite, 4 Mohs; calcite, 3 Mohs) through mere contact. Protect fragile crystal points (selenite, aragonite, celestine) from falling, as their perfect crystal terminations break off easily.

Store light-sensitive stones (amethyst, citrine, rose quartz, kunzite) in a dark place or covered. Store moisture-sensitive stones (selenite, halite) dry. If you collect rarer minerals, invest in a mineral display cabinet with a soft base and UV-protective glass.

Browse raw stones by type: raw amethyst, raw rock crystal, raw obsidian, raw malachite, raw labradorite, raw moldavite, raw lapis lazuli or a MIX of raw stones. For worked varieties: tumbled stones, collector's minerals, druzies or geodes. For stone jewelry: necklaces, bracelets or pendants.
