Zoisite – A Beautiful and Mysterious Stone

Zoisite – the mineral of three famous varieties: tanzanite, thulite and ruby in zoisite

Zoisite is a calcium aluminum silicate with the formula Ca2Al3Si3O12(OH) and a hardness of 6–7 Mohs, which occurs in nature in several color varieties with completely different properties. It was named in 1805 after the Slovenian naturalist Baron Sigmund Zois von Edelstein (1747–1819), who funded mineralogical expeditions and passed a specimen to Abraham Gottlob Werner for scientific description. Today zoisite is famous above all for three of its varieties: tanzanite (the transparent blue/violet variety found only in Tanzania; a ~8 km2 deposit in the Merelani Hills), thulite (the pink massive variety from Norway, colored by manganese) and ruby in zoisite, also called anyolite (a natural intergrowth of green zoisite with red ruby crystals and black hornblende from Tanzania). In esoterica, zoisite is called "the stone of the heart, abundance and connecting body with spirit" , with its primary domain in the heart chakra (Anahata).

In our range you will find zoisite in various forms: tumbled zoisite, raw zoisite, zoisite bracelets and zoisite necklaces. For the individual famous varieties: tanzanite, thulite and ruby in zoisite.

Three famous varieties of zoisite

  • Tanzanite – the most famous variety; transparent blue-violet; hardness 6.5 Mohs; strong pleochroism (blue, violet, red along different axes); exclusively the Merelani Hills, Tanzania, a ~8 km2 deposit; reserves estimated at 20–30 years; discovered in 1967; named by Tiffany & Co.; heart + third eye + crown chakra
  • Thulite – the pink massive variety of zoisite; colored by manganese (Mn3+); opaque; hardness 6.5 Mohs; localities primarily in Telemark, Norway (named after "Thule", the mythical northernmost land of ancient geography); heart chakra; love and compassion
  • Ruby in zoisite (anyolite) – a natural polycrystalline rock of green zoisite with red ruby crystals (Al2O3 + Cr) and black amphibole (hornblende); comes exclusively from Tanzania (the Longido area); the name anyolite comes from the Maasai "anyoli" (green); heart chakra + root chakra; connecting the heart with vitality

Name and localities of zoisite

  • Named in 1805: the German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner named the mineral after Baron Sigmund Zois von Edelstein (1747–1819) – a Slovenian nobleman, philanthropist and patron of the natural sciences who funded the collection and study of minerals in the Alps and passed on a specimen for scientific classification
  • Tanzanite – the Merelani Hills, Tanzania: the only locality in the world; an area of ~8 km2 in sight of Mount Kilimanjaro; discovered in 1967 (credited to the prospector Manuel de Souza, with Maasai herders often mentioned in the story); commercially developed by Tiffany & Co., which named it "tanzanite" after Tanzania; reserves estimated at 20–30 years
  • Thulite – Telemark, Norway: first locality 1820; name from "Thule" (the northernmost known land of antiquity); today also Namibia, Australia, USA
  • Ruby in zoisite – Longido, Tanzania: the locality near Longido, not far from Arusha; a characteristic combination of a green zoisite matrix with red ruby crystals and black hornblende
  • Green zoisite (raw): Tanzania, Kenya, Norway, India, Madagascar; massive or columnar crystals; green color from admixtures of vanadium or chromium

• Esoteric properties of zoisite

In esoteric tradition, zoisite is called "the stone of the heart, abundance and connecting body with spirit". Each variety brings its own specific esoteric accent:

  • Abundance and prosperity – the green color of zoisite as the color of nature and growth; it traditionally attracts abundance
  • Connecting the heart with vitality – especially ruby in zoisite; the green heart energy of zoisite + the red vitality of ruby
  • Transformation and spiritual awakening – tanzanite; connecting the heart, third eye and crown chakras
  • Love and compassion – thulite; a gentle feminine heart energy
  • Creativity and self-expression
  • Grounding during spiritual work
  • Strengthening natural abilities and talents

Esoteric tradition describes effects on a spiritual level. Zoisite is not a medicinal product and does not replace medical care.

Zoisite and the chakras

  • 4th, heart chakra (Anahata) – primary for all varieties; love, abundance, connection
  • 1st, root chakra (Muladhara) – secondary for ruby in zoisite; the earthy vitality of the ruby component
  • 6th, third eye (Ajna) and 7th, crown (Sahasrara) – tanzanite; the spiritual dimension of zoisite
  • Connecting the chakras: ruby in zoisite is exceptional in that it traditionally connects the heart and root chakras – the heart with physical vitality

• Which zodiac signs it suits

  • Sagittarius (23 Nov – 21 Dec) – primary for tanzanite; spiritual seeking, wisdom, connection with higher dimensions
  • Aries (21 Mar – 20 Apr) – for ruby in zoisite; vitality, courage, strength of heart
  • Libra (23 Sep – 23 Oct) – for thulite; balance, harmony, love
  • Taurus (21 Apr – 21 May) – for green zoisite; abundance, nature, grounding
  • Pisces (21 Feb – 20 Mar) – for tanzanite; intuition, spiritual depth, connection

Mineralogical properties of zoisite

  • Chemical formula: Ca2Al3Si3O12(OH) – a calcium aluminum silicate with a hydroxyl group
  • System: orthorhombic
  • Hardness: 6–7 Mohs (depending on the variety and direction)
  • Luster: vitreous to pearly
  • Cleavage: perfect in one direction
  • Colors: grey, green, yellow (massive zoisite); blue/violet (tanzanite); pink (thulite); a green-red combination (ruby in zoisite)
  • Tanzanite – pleochroism: tanzanite is strongly trichroic – along different crystallographic axes it shows blue, violet and reddish brown; heating stabilizes the color into the optimal blue-violet
  • Ruby in zoisite – composition: zoisite (green Ca2Al3Si3O12(OH)) + corundum (red Al2O3 + Cr, i.e. ruby) + hornblende (black amphibole)

Caring for zoisite

  • Hardness 6–7 Mohs: moderately durable; suitable for jewelry with care
  • Cleavage: perfect cleavage in one direction – beware of hard knocks (especially tanzanite)
  • Water: brief contact does no harm; take it off before bathing and swimming
  • Cleaning: a soft damp cloth; dry immediately; avoid ultrasonic cleaners
  • Sun: tanzanite and thulite can fade in prolonged direct sunlight; prefer diffuse light
  • Energy cleansing: sage smudging or a selenite plate
  • Charging: moonlight or brief morning sunlight
  • Protect from: chemicals, perfumes and acids
  • Storage: in a soft pouch, separately from harder stones

• Frequently asked questions about zoisite

What is zoisite and what are its best-known varieties?+

Zoisite is a calcium aluminum silicate, Ca2Al3Si3O12(OH), with a hardness of 6–7 Mohs, named in 1805 after the Slovenian patron of science Baron Sigmund Zois. Its three most famous varieties are tanzanite (the transparent blue/violet variety found only in Tanzania), thulite (the pink massive variety from Norway) and ruby in zoisite (a natural intergrowth of green zoisite with red ruby crystals from Tanzania).

Green massive zoisite (without a specific name) is the basic form and occurs in Tanzania, Norway, India and Madagascar. Tanzanite is the most valuable and best known of all the varieties thanks to its exceptional color and limited locality.

What is ruby in zoisite and where does it come from?+

Ruby in zoisite (anyolite) is a natural polycrystalline rock made up of three minerals: green zoisite as the matrix, red ruby crystals (corundum Al2O3 with an admixture of chromium) and black hornblende (an amphibole). It comes exclusively from the Longido area in Tanzania, not far from Arusha, and the name anyolite comes from the Maasai word "anyoli" (green).

Esoterically, ruby in zoisite is exceptional in that it traditionally connects two seemingly opposite energies: the gentle heart energy of zoisite (green) with the radiant vitality and courage of ruby (red) – primarily on the heart and root chakras.

What are the esoteric properties of zoisite?+

In esoteric tradition, zoisite is "the stone of the heart, abundance and connecting body with spirit" – it works primarily on the heart chakra (Anahata) and traditionally attracts abundance, strengthens creativity and connects the emotional heart with physical vitality. The specific esoteric accent depends on the variety: tanzanite connects the heart, third eye and crown chakras; thulite brings gentle heart love; ruby in zoisite connects the heart with root vitality.

Zoisite is not a medicinal product and does not replace medical care.

How does tanzanite differ from other blue stones?+

Tanzanite is the transparent blue-violet variety of zoisite found only in Tanzania (the Merelani Hills, ~8 km2), and it has an exceptionally strong trichroism – along different crystallographic axes it shows blue, violet and reddish-brown colors. It differs from sapphire in its origin (sapphire is corundum, Al2O3), from iolite in density and from amethyst in chemical composition. Tanzanite reserves are limited and estimated at 20–30 years.

Viewed from different directions, tanzanite can look bluish, violet or reddish brown. Heating (a common treatment) stabilizes the color into the most sought-after blue-violet combination. Every genuine tanzanite comes from a single locality on Earth.

Which zodiac signs is zoisite suitable for?+

Zoisite is traditionally recommended primarily for Sagittarius (23 Nov – 21 Dec) for tanzanite, whose spirituality and connection with higher consciousness correspond to Sagittarius's natural desire for philosophy and transcendence. Aries will appreciate ruby in zoisite for vitality and courage of heart, Libra thulite for harmony and love, Taurus green zoisite for abundance and grounding.

In general, zoisite suits anyone seeking to connect heart with spirit, to attract abundance or to work with the heart chakra – regardless of sign.

How do I care for zoisite jewelry and stones?+

With a hardness of 6–7 Mohs and perfect cleavage in one direction, zoisite needs protection from hard knocks, as it can crack along its natural cleavage plane – this applies especially to tanzanite. Clean it with a soft damp cloth and avoid ultrasonic cleaners and steam. Take it off before bathing, sport and applying chemicals. Protect tanzanite and thulite from prolonged direct sunlight.

Cleanse it energetically by smudging with sage or on a selenite plate. Charge it in moonlight. Store it in a soft pouch.

For the individual varieties of zoisite: tanzanite and tanzanite necklaces, thulite and thulite necklaces, ruby in zoisite pendants, tumbled ruby in zoisite, ruby in zoisite points. For zoisite as a mineral: tumbled zoisite, raw zoisite, zoisite bracelets or zoisite necklaces. For heart chakra stones: rose quartz, malachite or prehnite.
