Yooperlite Bracelets

Yooperlite bracelets – "fire stones" from the American Great Lakes

Yooperlite is one of the newest and most fascinating discoveries in modern mineralogy. Scientifically, it is a syenite rich in fluorescent sodalite – a rock that looks like an ordinary stone in daylight but glows orange to yellow under UV (ultraviolet) light, as if it held hidden flames. That is why it is nicknamed "fire rock" .

Yooperlite was discovered only in 2017 by the American rock hunter Erik Rintamaki on the shore of Lake Superior in Michigan. The name "Yooperlite" comes from the nickname "Yooper" – the colloquial term for residents of Michigan's Upper Peninsula (U.P.). Yooperlites® is now a registered trademarkheld by Rintamaki himself.

What exactly is Yooperlite?

Yooperlite is not a separate mineralbut an igneous rock (syenite) containing fluorescent sodalite. Fluorescence means that the stone absorbs UV radiation and emits visible light – in the case of Yooperlite, a characteristic bright orange to yellow color. Without UV light it looks like an ordinary greyish-black stone; under a UV lamp it lights up like glowing embers.

  • Rock: syenite (an igneous magmatic rock)
  • Fluorescent component: sodalite (a blue mineral from the feldspathoid group)
  • Glow under UV: orange to yellow at a wavelength of 365 nm
  • Hardness: 5.5–6 on the Mohs scale (like sodalite)
  • Formation: ancient volcanic activity; glaciers scattered it along the beaches of Lake Superior
  • Locality: Michigan's Upper Peninsula, USA (later also Canada, the Lake Superior area in Ontario)

The story of the discovery (2017)

Yooperlite has one of the newest and at the same time most interesting discovery stories of all stones:

  • September 2017 – Erik Rintamaki, a passionate rock hunter from Michigan, took a UV flashlightto the beach of Lake Superior. He was looking for agate but found something much more interesting – three stones that glowed orange under UV light
  • 2018 – samples were analyzed by Michigan Technological University , which confirmed that they were syenite rich in fluorescent sodalite – the first confirmed occurrence of sodalite in Michigan (sodalite was the 386th mineral found in Michigan)
  • May 2018 – the discovery was officially announced and Yooperlite became a worldwide phenomenon
  • Today – Yooperlite hunting (searching for fire stones with UV flashlights at night) is a popular tourist activity in Michigan

The esoteric symbolism of Yooperlite

Since Yooperlite is a recent discovery, its esoteric tradition is still taking shape. Modern crystal therapy attributes to it properties derived from sodalite (its fluorescent component) and from the symbolism of light and radiance:

  • A symbol of spiritual enlightenment – from darkness into light, "the soul lighting up"
  • "A stone of truth" – it reveals hidden truths (as UV light reveals the stone's glow)
  • Support for self-knowledge and inner insight
  • Strengthening intuition and creativity
  • Protection against negative energies – the fluorescent glow as a symbolic "shield of light"
  • The traditional effects of sodalite – memory, concentration, logical thinking (Yooperlite contains sodalite)
  • Connection with higher consciousness – meditation and spiritual practice

Because it contains sodalite, Yooperlite is associated with the third eye chakra (6th, Ajna) and the throat chakra (5th, Vishuddha).

Our range of Yooperlite bracelets

In our category you will find Yooperlite bracelets in various sizes:

  • Yooperlite bracelet 4 mm – delicate small beads, suitable for everyday wear

Caring for Yooperlite bracelets

  • Cleaning: wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth
  • CAREFUL with water: it tolerates brief contact with lukewarm water, but we do not recommend long soaking (the elastic cord could be damaged)
  • CAREFUL – a medium-hard stone: Yooperlite has a hardness of 5.5–6 (Mohs) and is more sensitive to knocks
  • Before showering, the sauna, swimming or sport: always take it off
  • Charging: ideally full-moon light or a selenite plate
  • Protect from: household chemicals, perfumes, creams
  • Storage: in a soft pouch or jewelry box
  • The fluorescent properties of Yooperlite are permanent – they do not disappear with time or wear

What is Yooperlite and why does it glow under UV light?+

Yooperlite is a trade name for syenite (an igneous rock) rich in fluorescent sodalite. It is not a separate mineral but a combination of rock and minerals with an extraordinary property: under UV (ultraviolet) light of 365 nm , Yooperlite glows orange to yellow. The fluorescence arises because the fluorescent sodalite in the rock absorbs UV radiation and releases visible light. Without UV light, Yooperlite looks like an ordinary greyish-black stone, so it can only be found at night with a UV flashlight. That is why it is called "fire rock" . Yooperlites® is a registered trademark held by its discoverer, Erik Rintamaki.

Who discovered Yooperlite and when?+

Yooperlite was discovered in September 2017 by the American rock hunter Erik Rintamaki from Michigan. Rintamaki was a passionate rock hunter who took a UV flashlight to the beach of Lake Superior – he was looking for agate but found three stones that glowed orange under UV light. Samples were subsequently analyzed by Michigan Technological University , which confirmed in 2018 that they were syenite rich in fluorescent sodalite – the first confirmed occurrence of sodalite in Michigan (it became the 386th mineral found in the state). Rintamaki named the stone "Yooperlite" – "Yooper" is the nickname for residents of Michigan's Upper Peninsula (U.P.), and "lite" refers to its fluorescent property.

How do I make Yooperlite "light up"?+

To see the fluorescence of Yooperlite, you need a UV (ultraviolet) flashlight with a wavelength of 365 nm. When you shine it on the stone in a dark environment , Yooperlite glows bright orange to yellow – as if it held hidden flames. Without UV light, the stone looks like an ordinary greyish-black pebble. The fluorescent property is permanent – it does not fade with time, wear or exposure to light. 365 nm UV flashlights are readily available and are often sold together with Yooperlite. Caution: do not look directly into a UV flashlight – ultraviolet radiation can damage your eyes.

What are the esoteric effects of Yooperlite?+

Since Yooperlite is a recent discovery (2017), its esoteric tradition is still taking shape – it draws on the symbolism of light and on the effects of sodalite (its fluorescent component). Modern crystal therapy attributes to it the symbolism of spiritual enlightenment ("from darkness into light"), the ability to reveal hidden truths (as UV light reveals its glow), support for self-knowledge, intuition and creativity and protection against negative energies (the fluorescent glow as a symbolic "shield of light"). Thanks to its sodalite content, it builds on the effects of that stone – memory, concentration, logical thinking, clear communication. It works on the third eye chakra (6th, Ajna) and the throat chakra (5th, Vishuddha).

How do I care for a Yooperlite bracelet?+

Yooperlite needs careful care – it is medium hard (Mohs 5.5–6) and contains sodalite with calcite, which is sensitive to acids. Cleaning: wipe gently with a soft, slightly damp cloth. We do not recommend long soaking in water – the elastic cord could be damaged. CAREFUL with chemicals: protect it from perfumes, disinfectants, sunscreen and household chemicals. CAREFUL with knocks: the stone scratches more easily; take it off for sport and manual work. Before showering, the sauna and swimming, always take it off. Charging: ideally full-moon light or a selenite plate. The fluorescent properties of Yooperlite are permanent and do not fade.
