Kambaba jasper is a true living treasure of the Earth. In fact, it is not a classic jasper but fossil stromatolite – layered structures created by ancient blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). These microorganisms are among the oldest forms of life on Earth and were building stromatolites as early as 3,5 billion years ago! It was these cyanobacteria that, through their photosynthesis, filled the Earth's atmosphere with oxygen and thus made possible the evolution of all higher forms of life, including us.

The characteristic green circles in the stone are petrified colonies of cyanobacteriathat slowly layered calcareous sediments. The stone is mined mainly in Madagascar (hence the name “Kambaba" – a local name), but some finds also come from Africa.
