- A tooth of a prehistoric ancestor of the shark that inhabited the Earth during the Paleocene - Tertiary, i.e. more than 60 million years ago.
- Other body parts are found only very rarely.
- The advantage is that shark teeth regrew regularly throughout the shark's life, and at some localities fossilized shark teeth are very abundant.
- Shark teeth occur in various sizes and shapes. That is why they are very popular among collectors.
- Well known are the teeth of the species Carcharodon megalodon, which reach such dimensions that they attract the attention not only of experts but also of the general public.
