Amethyst

Amethyst is the purple variety of quartz (silicon dioxide). Traces of iron and natural radiation give it its color. It has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, so it suits jewelry. It is mined mostly in Brazil, Uruguay and Zambia and often forms druses.
