Mohs hardness scale

The Mohs scale measures the resistance of minerals to scratching on a scale from 1 to 10. The softest is talc (1), the hardest diamond (10). Quartz has a hardness of 7, selenite only 2. The higher the number, the better a stone suits jewelry and everyday wear.
