Tanzanite
Tanzanite is a blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite, discovered in 1967 in Tanzania near Mount Kilimanjaro. It has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and strong pleochroism. The only significant deposit lies in Tanzania, so it is among the rarer gemstones. It is sensitive to impact and sudden temperature changes.
