Onyx

Onyx is a banded variety of chalcedony with parallel stripes, most often black and white or black. It has a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. Most black onyx on the market is artificially dyed. Beware of the name marble onyx, which is actually calcite, a softer stone.
