Jet
Jet is a black, light, dull-lustrous rock formed from fossilized wood, a type of black coal. It is not a crystalline mineral. It has a hardness of 2.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale and polishes and carves well. In the past it was popular in mourning jewelry. The best known deposits are near Whitby in England.
