Emerald

Emerald is a deep green variety of beryl. Traces of chromium and sometimes vanadium give it its color. It has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale but is often brittle because of tiny fractures. The best known deposits are in Colombia and Zambia. It is one of the classic precious stones.
